Title: Beyer’s old school
Author: Tom Frantzen
Translated from the original German article
When beyerdynamic launched their legendary DT 880 top model in 1980/81 it was like a small landslide.
The best working tool of the old school was and is the neutral DT 880. The same refers to musical enjoyment, at least when you do without effects and allow for long listening sessions.
The new DT 880, however, with the same name since 2003, is from its appearance a completely different headphone. Almost 100 grams heavier, equipped with noble and high-quality aluminium parts. Compared to its predecessor, it is technically rather light and haptic according to beyerdynamic – that is heavily revised.
The author to these lines wrote in the June issue of Stereo in 2003: “Remoulded headphone classic with a very excellent sound” and “a captivating natural, lively and powerful sound.”
The pressure is slightly higher, but is reduced by the better and pleasant pads. The sound of the DT 880 is therefore a little bit mature, the bass is more powerful, more sonorous in total, but still transparent.
